SECTOR MANNED
BY AMERICANS
(Associated Press)
WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE, Nov. 17.—Several German shells struck an American gun early this morning in the French sector where the Sammies are completing their training, and was the cause of several casualties. In addition to these, two members of the American force died today in a base hospital from wounds received in an earlier engagement.
The Germans are actively engaged in shelling the American positions, and great numbers of shrapnel shells are being thrown into the trenches. A number of men have been wounded by these shells. The artillery activity is growing heavier every day and at times the roar is continuous.
The Americans are firing rapidly in return against the German positions, and observers declare that the casualties and damage inflicted in the German lines by the American shells are much greater than is caused by the German fire.
The courage and marksmanship of the American troops is the cause of considerable admiration by the French, to whom it is a revelation. The French general commanding the sector has mentioned in his dispatches for especial recognition fifteen American officers and enlisted men. Among the latter were included three men who have since been killed.
Daily a greater number of American aviators are making flights as observers or pilots under French airmen and are rapidly becoming expert in the art of dropping bombs on military stations or columns of troops. Several American aviators have accompanied the Frenchmen on long raids over German territory, and all have returned safely.
