A State Convention Or the Opposition.

A recent number of the Richmond Whig contains an able article suggesting the call of a State Convention of the Opposition in this State. This is a move in the right direction. We want such an assemblage, composed of the most discreet, conservative and sagacious members of the Opposition in the State, to consider the important and momentous issues now before the country, and to aid in devising means for a thorough organization of the conservative Union men of the country into a great Union party. --Leesburg Wash.

We are glad to see that the proposition to hold an Opposition State Convention, to give expression to the calm and deliberate political sentiment of Virginia, is meeting with the favor that it is proper it should receive. Already a meeting to appoint delegates has been held in the county of Southampton, Benj. Devany in the chair, and E. L. Strong, acting secretary--and the following resolutions adopted:--Petersburg Int.

Resolved, That we, a portion of the Opposition party of Southampton, believing that a convention in Virginia, a convention of the wisest, most discreet, and most conservative of men of the State, a convention which will give expression to the calm and deliberate political sentiment of Virginia, that will be potential throughout the State, is eminently proper and desirable at this time, Therefore,

Resolved, That Thos. J. Pretlow, Robt. M. Doles, and Thos. H. Urquhart, be appointed delegates to said Convention, to be held at such time and place as may be hereafter designated.
