Jimmy Smith's Feats Stir Sports Circles

By ALVIN MOSES for ANP

PENN RELAYS, FRANKLIN FIELD, Phila.—Today, as we sat here in the east-wing stands viewing the closing hours of the greatest athletic spectacle America offers to its citizenry each year, our mind carried back to the Olympic Games, and the taunting remarks of Adolf Hitler who styled our bronzed heroes "Black Auxiliaries."

The "Auxiliaries" were on parade again today, just as they'll be on parade next year and the next and the next ad infinitum, until time and the races of men are no more. Glorious were these hot-blooded sons of dark-skinned mothers built like heroic figures chiseled from the peerless mallet of a Phidias. They ran as if running was a part of their very existence, and what would those Nordics say about "NEGRO STAMINA," and yet INTERNAL FORTITUDE have to say about the grand performance of our friend JIMMY SMITH (what a name to conjure with) who sped a mile in the sensational time of 4 minutes 14 seconds?

The daily papers of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and the entire eastern seaboard loudly acclaimed that there is in their midst a RACE CHAMPION OF GROUP who whole athletic murals is concerned by this untutored product of the foot, 165 pounds 23-year old strapping middle distance whiz did in one fell swoop perform feats of such caliber as Tommie Deckard Truly! and the incomparable, Gene Venzke, Don Lash.
