THE GLORIOUS RESULT.

The time to which the whole American people have looked with such intense interest and anxiety, has come, and is now mingled with the times that are past.

The election for electors has been held in every State, except South Carolina, and about this no one cares, and the triumph of principle over injustice, fraud, outrage, oppression, ambition and power is complete, yet it is GLORIOUS!—IT IS GLORIOUS! The country is SAFE—the foundations of the Republic are greatly strengthened. Our civil and religious institutions are rescued from the power of loco focoism, and the destructive notions of agrarianism. The Hydra, which has caused such wide spread desolation over the fair field of constitutional liberty has been levelled in the dust by the club of the American Hercules—the BALLOT BOX.

Again, the American people have most emphatically spoken and declared themselves a SECOND time FREE and INDEPENDENT—not as at the first, against foreign domination, but against domestic tyranny.

Through the blessing of Almighty God, after a contest, a protracted contest of TWELVE years these United States are FREE.

The joy of the Whigs at the complete rout of Van Burenism, Kendallism and Brownsonism is characteristic of the untiring constancy with which, through a long controversy they have contended for the pure principles of the constitution. They indeed rejoice over their victory, but their joy is deep, temperate and rational—not that kind which vents itself in vain words, or in tumultuous boasting and senseless parade, for they look not for spoils—they have not contended for office, but for the constitution—and they rejoice, not so much because Wm. Henry Harrison is about to be placed in the presidential chair, as that the constitution is safe and the country is free.

Wonder if any body has seen the cannon that was borrowed to announce the expected loco victory in the Empire State, a few days ago.

The long continued excitement which has agitated the country for so many months is fast subsiding. The dove may go forth safely, or the waters of strife which but yesterday covered the land "are assuaged." We congratulate all our fellow citizens in view of the prospect of returning quiet and relief from the watchings and anxiety which has so long had possession of the public mind. We congratulate them upon the abundant harvest which has been just gathered in from the fruits of the earth—but especially would congratulate them that the dark clouds which have for years hung gloomily over the moral and political horizon have been scattered, the threatened tornado has passed, and the sun once more shines forth in its former brightness upon our land. We congratulate the Whigs and the sober and honest among the tories, who have, we doubt not, been held to the support of Van Buren, at the present election, rather from pride of opinion than from choice—upon a change of men—and more than this, a change of measures. But we have no sympathy for the disappointed office-holder or office-seeker, from Martin Van Buren downwards, nor can we sympathize with that portion of the conductors of the public press, who have prostituted its power and its influence to perpetuate the existence of a party, the grand object of whose leaders has been "the spoils;" and to keep in office a chief magistrate whose ultimate object has not been the good of the country or the perpetuity of her free institutions.

The Van Buren press [the ruling passion strong in death] continues to charge the Whigs with procuring fraudulent votes and so having in this way carried their ticket in every State. Humph! The Whigs must indeed have been diligent in collecting and importing illegal voters, as they could not all have come from Philadelphia or Canada even 120,000 illegal voters, equal to the whole vote of the State of Massachusetts, and this will be about the majority for Harrison on the popular vote. There Van Buren men have a wonderful faculty of "enlarging."

Would'nt they draw tears from a crocodile?
