Gossip Of The Movie Lots

BY HARRY LEVETTE

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -(ANP)- Hope you had a glorious Fourth; that you didn't blow off your eyebrows with a giant firecracker, or blow your top during a holiday traffic jam.

Righteous indignation occurs frequently in the theatrical, and movie world, in such cases as these few samples:

There was J. D. "Miss Ingratitude." taken to a studio, and the casting director, begged, cajoled, and almost bullied by her benefactor until she got her first start of many movies. Ask her who started her. She doesn't even remember.

There was B. R., an aspiring columnist and lyric writer. Benefactor got him on radio, published several of his verses nationally, but after promising to cover a convention for pay, did not do so, when benefactor could have sent some one else.

But in opposition to the ingrates, there are others like Nellie Lutcher who still tells how "Yours Truly" featured her on the stage of the old Tivoli theatre, now the Bill Robinson. or Hattie McDaniel, recalling how at her brother Sam's request, "Yours Helpfully" introduced her from that same stage, her first Sunday night here after arriving from their Denver home or the Covans. Willie and Florence who decided a $10 bet, made in the Dunbar lobby, by proudly admitting that they made their TV debut, on the big 50-cast variety show, this scribbler-producer, staged at the Shrine Auditorium, over KTLA, in October. 1949.

Incidentally everybody in coast TV radius praised that combination of vaudeville, square dancing. spiritual singing, and fast comedy. but another lady who was helped during the old Apex days. but who now is in her chips. knocked our efforts. rather than praised them to our sponsor. to whom she was talking.

NEW PIC FEATURES SEPIA SEQUENCE

"Night Without Sleep." with its big sepia night club sequence. will prove to be one of the best produced on the Twentieth Century- Fox lot this season. It will be emerging from the cutting room, before long.

Mae West, who a decade apparently made the secret of
fact that ex-middleweight champ Gorilla Jones, was her best box- office attraction with her current picture.

In it she is a lady pirate, ruling both by her charm and her fiery will, a reckless ship-load of blood thirsty buccaneers. Incidentally I must check on whether or not Jones has dropped plans to film a story of his life, .which was being written a year ago.

"Chris Columbus Brown," all colored cast stage musical comedy which opened at the Las Palmas theatre last week made a hit with patrons, and was treated kindly by daily paper theatrical critics.

They made an allowance for the fact that it was written here by Horace Stewart. a local Hollywood writer and composer. and that there were only a few top names, available for the cast.

Rex Ingram, former De Lawd of "Green Pastures" back in nearly his old form as an actor, was there with comedian Nickodemus, Mauri Lynn, plus a small boy, McHenry Norman, good in supporting roles.

PEEPING IN AT THE NIGHT SPOTS

Both the Oasis and the Club Alabam, made special preparations for the Fourth of July triple holiday crowd, content that beach and mountain pleasure seekers would be back in town for nightcaps and some dancing..Out of town visit- ors took advantage of recesses, .to fulfill a long felt want to see Hollywood, so the Sunset Strip, and other night spots jumped aplenty.

Horace Henderson, and his new band drew plenty of celebrities, and tired business men with their refreshing cuties, to the Bamboo Inn. on Lankershim Boulevard. Horace and his beautiful little wife, Angel, are both glad to be back on the coast.
