Full Text

Thanksgiving Day was not observed at this place. Business was not suspended; there were no Divine services in any of the churches; only the post office kept Sunday hours, and the Dispensary was closed, else we would not have known that it was a day set apart by the President of these great United States and the Governor of the grand Old Palmetto State for an occasion of rejoicing, thanksgiving and prayer to the Great Ruler of the Universe for the inestimable blessings of health, peace, prosperity and a bountiful harvest.

We presume that our people had nothing to be thankful for; or, at least they seemingly said this much by their neglect to keep the day as becomes Christians and an enlightened people.
