Full Text

From the New-York Chronicle.

By Capt. Masters, of the ship American Hero, from Gibraltar, we have information, that accounts had been received there of the Spaniards having ordered all American vessels immediately to leave the port of Cadiz. These orders have been probably occasioned by their conduct at New-Orleans, and from an expectation that the arbitrary measures adopted by Spain towards the United States, would produce a rupture between the two nations. It also gives strength to the belief (if any is still necessary) that the conduct of the Spanish Intendant is not unauthorized, but that all his acts have been predicated in the court of Spain, or by a power to which Spain is subservient, and which is inimical to the interests of the United States.

The above account, also, (if it is correct) evinces a disposition averse to accommodation, and rather inclined to widen the breach as much as possible.

Reposing full confidence in the wisdom of our executive, we trust such measures will be pursued as will best secure the interests and dignity of our country.

We cannot but express our surprise and regret that so precipitate a credit should be given to a mere report, founded on verbal information, and unconnected with any corroborating circumstances. Before the inferences contained in the above paragraph were drawn, there should have been some small time allowed to investigate the accuracy of the fact. It is scarcely conceivable that respecting a measure, injurious our government would not have received immediate intimation; and it might have been relied on that when received it would not have been concealed. We make this remark to inculcate more caution. No such intimation, we are well informed, has been received: and it is to be presumed that the rumor has entirely arisen from the recent quarantine regulations adopted in the Spanish ports.

Accounts from Gibraltar report Spaniards ordering all American vessels to immediately leave Cadiz port, likely due to conduct at New-Orleans and expectation of rupture between Spain and United States. The Spanish Intendant's actions are believed authorized by Spanish court or subservient power inimical to US interests. Editorial doubts the report's accuracy, suggesting it stems from quarantine regulations.
