The Chamber of Commerce had an unusually interesting meeting Tuesday noon, centering around tourists and considerable interest was shown in what could be done this season to make their visits here more enjoyable.
The tourist housing committee head by Martha Stephenson with Chuck Frazier and Willard Mecklenburg reported it has met with encouraging cooperation. They reported last weekend 30 visitors were housed in private homes without any trouble and they believe that 50 visitors could be taken care of. as they did not appeal to all the residents who have room available in their homes.
The committee also enthusiastically hope to plan a program to include a local museum and have adopted the slogan "Nome--The Friendliest City In Alaska."
The Chamber took action to assist the Arctic Club in promoting bigger and more dog races for the spring of 1957 due to the interest shown and as a winter attraction.
A renewed interest in the noon luncheons was manifested by an increased turn-out sparked by the membership drive still under way with many new members joining the organization.
