WASHINGTON - (UPI) - The Justice Department and the Civil Rights Commission Friday declined to get excited about Alabama Gov. John Patterson's criticism of "interference from Washington" in the investigation of Negro voter complaints.
A spokesman for the Civil Rights Commission said it had an investigator in Dallas County, Ala. for a full week but that he has now returned.
"When the investigator came to Alabama he saw the attorney general," the spokesman said, "and was greeted even cordially."
"He also talked to Ed Strickland who is on the governor's staff and a personal friend, so we assume that Patterson knew our investigator was there," the spokesman said.
The commission noted it must investigate any sworn complaint and that it was continuing to receive complaints from Dallas County.
Joseph Ryan, acting head of the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, said his office has several investigators in Alabama and also in other southern states.
He said Patterson's order to Alabama officials not to cooperate with investigators wouldn't hamper operations because they haven't cooperated too much so far.
