Last evening arrived here the brig Hope, Capt. Nichols, of Derby, in 19 days from St. Kitts. Dr. Tilton, late surgeon of the ship Ariel, Coats, from Canton to Philadelphia, came passenger in the brig. We are concerned to state, that he brings a confirmation of the fate of the Ariel: which vessel was captured on the 5th of May, by the French privateers Diomede, of 12 guns and 100 men, and the Harmony, of 10 guns and 97 men, after a smart engagement of one hour, in which the Ariel had two men killed, and three wounded. Captain Coats received a ball in the back, and Mr. Burgher, of this city, who also behaved with great gallantry during the action, was wounded by a musket ball which entered his back, and came out at his chin. The loss of the privateer was not known. The Ariel arrived at Guadaloupe the 20th May, and part of her cargo sold before our informant left that place.
Mr. Tilton further adds, 2 or 3 American vessels were daily brought in there; and that the owner of the above privateers is a mulatto, who was lately a slave at Martinique, and who, in a few months, has accumulated the sum of half a million sterling by privateering.
