NEW-YORK, JULY 24

In yesterday's Gazette we noticed the arrival of the frigate Essex, Capt. Bainbridge, after a fourteen months cruise on the Mediterranean station.

We are informed by Capt. B. that the island of Elba had been evacuated by the British troops.

That Minorca was to be delivered up by Admiral Sir James Saumarez on the 17th of June.

That the British still retained possession of Alexandria and of Malta.

That the day the Essex left Gibraltar, the fleet under the command of Lord Keith sailed for England, except the Superb, of 74 guns, she having remained as a guard ship.

That the Triumph, a 74, and the Active frigate of 40 guns, had just sailed for Algiers, on business, it was said, relative to the detention of an English merchantman by the Algerines.

We have before noticed the engagement more accurately stated by Capt. Bainbridge; from whom we learn, That the late engagement was only between a Portuguese frigate of 36, commanded by a Frenchman, and an Algerine frigate of 44 guns,—that it took place 15 miles to the southward of Malaga; and that it lasted only one hour, when the French captain had a leg taken off by a cannon ball. This circumstance had such an effect upon the crew, that they left their guns and went below; and, as the Algerines were boarding the ship, the wounded captain discharged a pistol at his own head and instantly expired. None of his officers, and but few of his crew, were killed in the engagement.

It is not unworthy of remark, that this was the first frigate ever built in Algiers and the first ever captured by them from a Christian power.

Capt. B. on his arrival here, received orders to proceed immediately for Washington; and we learn that the Essex will sail for that place on Thursday next.
