EVENING—A FRAGMENT.
Softly steals the lucid ray,
Smile of flow-declining day,
O'er the verdure-pictur'd green,
Through the breathing woodland scene,
Up the mountain's steepy height,
Painting beauty to the sight.
Mildly blows the fragrant gale
O'er the plain, the flow'ry dale,
Through the windings of the grove,
Whispering tales of plaintive love—
Songs of eve now warble mild,
Sadly sweet, and sweetly wild—
Softer grows the tender lay,
Borne by echo far away,
Wafted on the sighing breeze
Through the distant wavy trees—
All is music, all perfume,
Verdant foliage, smiling bloom
Blushes deck the mountain's brow,
Streak the grand aerial bow—
Now they vanish from the view,
Leave the sky in azure hue,
Tuneful carols now are still
Every vale, and plain, and hill
Ring no more the chirping lay,
Sweetly hymn'd to parting day.
Evening clad in mantle blue,
Lightly bath'd in dulcet dew,
Slowly o'er the velvet green,
Comes with graceful, pensive mien;
Veiling as She takes her way,
Ev'ry scene in vesture grey,
Sprinkling on each herb and flow'r
Pearly drops of genial pow'r;
Lulling nature's breathing charms
All in slumber's downy arms.—
Through the mantling trees afar,
Twinkles bright the silver star,
On the bosom of the stream
Softly rests each smiling gleam;
Waking all the Naiad train,
Sweet to breathe the evening air
Round the streamlet's margin way
Gently trip in prightly play.—
Fancy now, with flowing hair,
Loosely waving in the air,
Nymph of rapture—speaking eye,
Cheek of lovely blushing dye,
Dimpled chin, and airy form,
Breath with lively feelings warm,
Frolicks in the dusky lawn,
Nimble as the frisking fawn;
O'er the green the lonely vale,
Warbling wild some melting tale.
