Slubbed silks and prints are the favorites everywhere, especially in costumes with brief jackets. "Flax silk," so sheer it has to be lined, is newest. Printed pongee, surah, chiffon, and linen-like types are other favorites.

Navy is prominent in very dark shades, often hard to tell from black which itself is considerably higher on the list this spring.

Note: Modified Empire Silhouette

The 1959 spring season is characterized by a return to accepted silhouettes, no extreme trends, no excuses, no exaggerations.

This means primarily a fitted waistline, with the fashion news centering on extremely modified versions of the Empire line.

This is generally described as "fitted line," and most often is combined with fit or shaping at the natural waist.

The general endorsement of the shirtwaist dress is another sign of the return to traditional silhouettes. These are among the general findings of Women's Wear Daily's fashion editors in reviewing manufacturers' spring lines.

Big enthusiasm of the season is for the costume, and this means the dress and short jacket.

While some dress and long coat costumes are seen, jackets generally are short, loosely shaped without curves, offered with moderately high-waisted skirt or one-piece dress.

The narrow skirt is most popular for daytime wear.

However, the emphasis on the shirtwaist dress, which is often seen with full skirt, has boosted the percentage for skirt width. Sheaths are often seen with contrasting print or solid tops.
