MILITARY INSPECTION

On Thursday last, the militia companies of this town, and the artillery company, were inspected by Major Allen, attended by Col. Webb, Major Wilson, Major M'Lellan, and Major Weeks of the artillery. The prompt attention of the soldiers, a part of whom were handsomely uniformed at their own expense, affords a most flattering proof that the people of Maine will not be backward, when dangers threaten. The militia of several of our neighboring towns were also reviewed in the course of the last week.

Mr. Nathaniel Moody is chosen Captain of the artillery company in this town, lately commanded by Major Weeks.

Capt. Stoddard has enlisted 25 recruits for the Federal Artillerists and Engineers--all fine fellows--in complete uniform, and under good and regular discipline.

The laws of the Union are peculiarly favorable to the soldiery. One of them provides, that no soldier, while in the service of his country, shall be arrested for any debt or contract, either on mesne process or execution. A fine chance for those who wish to escape the griping hands of remorseless creditors!
