where, it was claimed, the
onslaught was repelled in bitter
fighting.

tor 40 miles northwest of Smol-
ensk where, it was intimated, no
Russian gains have been scored
yet.
3. The winding 300-mile front
from Sukhinichi to Belgorod, with
the Russians reported hurling 10
divisions, including guards units,
into the most terrific attacks of all.
4. The river Mius sector of the
Kuban where the Russians are
striking out again after a lull in
the Caucasus bridgehead battle.
A Nazi broadcast recorded by
the Associated Press said forces
were engaged on both sides on
a "scale never known before."
German accounts admitted that
their defenses had been unable to
hold the force of the Russian at-
tack in the most vital sector.
In the key struggle north of
Orel, they said, the enemy was
able to achieve only some small
penetration without importance for
the situation as a whole because
local breaches had been taken into
account during the Soviet mass
drives and because German coun-
ter-measures had been taken and
finally because, owing to swampy
forest area, there is no continu-
ous line on either side."
The first Russian summer of-
fensive pressed ever closer to Orel
from three sides across rolling
and soggy fields, Moscow dispatch-
es said as the Russian phase of
the battle went into its second
week. The Germans were pouring
reinforcements into the threatend
Orel bulge in the Russian lines.
Russian columns were driving
behind the bulge from the north
and south in an effort to bag the
great base and its thousands of
enemy troops. Other armies were
pounding in frontally from the
east.
Opposing claims of casualties
were staggering. Since the violent
summer battles started July 5,
with an abortive German offensive
to erase a 7,500-square mile sali-
ent jutting from Kursk, the Rus-
sians say they have destroyed up-
wards of 60,000 Germans, 3,444
tanks and 1,997 planes.
The German radio outcounted
the Russians in materiel losses.
however, asserting the Soviets had
lost 4,964 tanks, more than 2,000
planes, 2,310 cannon and 3,500
heavy machineguns.
All the German accounts were
from Radio Berlin and recorded
by the Associated Press.
