"Let us work not as colored people nor as white people for the narrow benefit of any group alone, but together, as American citizens for the common good of our common city, our common country," were the words spoken by the late Ruth Standish Baldwin, founder of the Urban league movement, in these United States.
The strength of the Urban League movement has been that it continued to dedicate most of its effort of carrying out the lofty sentiments, so well expressed by Mrs. Baldwin.
In Minneapolis and St. Paul the Urban League affiliates have long earned their right to standing and prestige because of the constructive work they have accomplished through the years. They are among the groups which will receive the bulk of their financial support from the United Fund Drive in Minneapolis and the Greater St. Paul Community Fund Drive in the Saintly City.
The two Urban Leagues of the Twin Cities; Hallie Q. Brown House and Crispus Attucks Home in St. Paul and Phyllis Wheatley House in Minneapolis are reasons why readers of this paper should contribute generously to the Community Chest Fund if they reside in St. Paul and the United Fund if they live in Minneapolis.
If every citizen who has in some manner been directly helped by one or more of these agencies directly contributes his bit it will help put over the financial drive. Even those who have had no contact need or exposure to or with the agencies listed must realize that these community movements, help make our towns better places to live, and deserve our financial support.-Cecil E. Newman.
