Bishop Morrison of Iowa Orders Clergy of His Diocese To Be Stricter in Remarriage Cases.
In a letter to the clergy and laity of the Episcopal diocese of Iowa declaring that the growing laxity among the American people in the matter of divorce needs rebuke and ought to be checked.
The canons of the Episcopal church prohibit the remarriage of divorcees, except the innocent party in a case of infidelity. Where this was not pleaded in the divorce case American bishops have frequently heard testimony intended to establish it and granted dispensation for the marriage of the divorcee.
Bishop Morrison states that he will in the future decline to go behind the court record in all such cases. He warns the clergy of Iowa against carelessness in this regard and declares that no man who has been divorced and remarried should allow himself to be elected to office in the church.
