A FIRE COMPANY.

Messrs. Gales & Seaton.

The Citizens of Washington have had, within the last few days, two serious warnings of the dreadful effects of Fire; and therefore an occasion presents itself for appealing to their feelings, and interesting them in the important and essential work of making preparations to meet that destructive enemy to our prosperity & growth, with better success, when it shall again visit us. The total destitution of discipline and regularity at the fire on Saturday evening, (by which one of our most enterprising and industrious Citizens has suffered a severe loss, and our City been deprived of a valuable and useful establishment) shows the necessity of adopting some vigorous and efficacious measures to arrest the ravages of so dreadful and destructive an element—

Not only the number of Engines, but the number of Fire-Companies, should be increased, without a moment's delay—And the companies already established ought to lose no time in introducing a regular and perfect state of discipline, as well as providing themselves with the requisite ladders, hooks, axes, &c. of which they appear at present to be most lamentably destitute.

With a view to commence this laudable and necessary work, and to call together the most active and efficient aid, I beg, through the medium of your paper, to request a meeting of such of the citizens of the second ward from about the age of eighteen to thirty, as are disposed to form a new Fire Company, on this day, at 7 o'clock at M'Keown's Tavern.
