CLUB IN RISING VOTE
Meeting is Marked by Enthusiasm.
SAVANNAH, May 9.-At a largely attended mass meeting of the Citizens Club last night, characterized by most intense enthusiasm, the candidacy of Hon. Joseph M. Brown was overwhelmingly endorsed.
Many spirited addresses in advocacy of Mr. Brown marked the occasion.
Among the speakers was Judge H. D. D. Twiggs, whose remarks created a great deal of interest.
Judge Twiggs declared that the Governor's political books have been checked up, that he has been found short, indicted by public sentiment, and is now being tried. He said the verdict will be returned June 4, and it will be: "We, the jury find the defendant guilty and recommend him to political oblivion during the remainder of his natural life."
"By his magic eloquence, his artful powers of deception and promises he never intended to redeem,"
Judge Twiggs said, "Hoke Smith fooled the people in the most extraordinary campaign two years ago this state has ever seen."
"We will pay Joe Brown's expenses if he will come to Savannah and let the people see him," rejoined a Smith advocate.
"But, thank God, beauty is only skin deep," came back the speaker, "and when you get below Hoke Smith's skin you find the prince of demagogues and a craven heart."
Of course the speaker had the crowd with him and there were shouts for the interrupting auditor to keep quiet, with threats that he would be put out if he didn't accord courtesy to the speaker.
Judge Twiggs continued, saying the people of Georgia swallowed Hoke Smith like the whale swallowed Jonah, and "the people of this state are suffering from the worst attack of political bellyache in its history."
Judge Twiggs said Hoke Smith never intended to run for Governor a second time, that he made extravagant promises he never intended to redeem and intended succeeding to Senator Clay's toga before his political books were checked up.
Before he closed the speaker paid a tribute to Tom Watson. He said man proposes, but God disposes, and referred in complimentary terms to the leading citizen of McDuffie county, who has entered the fight against the man he elected two years ago.
