NEWBURYPORT. April 11.

Extract of a letter from Port-au-Prince, to a Gentleman in this town, dated March 14th, 1792.

By Capt.—I have to inform you the melancholy News of the Revolt of the Negroes at Leogane. The gang from Troo-Caffee came down on the night of the 11th inst. and at 4 o'clock in the morning of the 12th they entered the town of Leogane. The Inhabitants beat the Gen. The Commissary, then at Leogane, sent an express on board the frigate, the noble Captain and Crew were on shore in a few minutes, and, headed by so good a man, they soon made the enemy retreat; one party ran off and began to set fire to the plains—the negroes immediately revolted. and joined the Troo-Caffee gang in great numbers, and continued fighting all day in the Savannah out of the town. The mulattoes of the town and the free negroes of the town fought like brave men, to defend the town and kept it all day—the 13th at 4 o'clock in the morning the enemy attacked the town again, but the town party repulsed them and killed great numbers; it is said that two thousand or upwards of different colors, as well as parties, are killed, and the greater part of the plantations burned.

The Commissary had sent here two days before, for 150 men, but the jealoufy of the people here is so great, they could not agree, and as yet none have gone, but I suppose they will go to night, as preparations are making and cannon and stores embarking—that the Lord has forsaken the people of this Island. is most certain. and the Devil has put his priests and friars at the head of the murderers and destroyers of the People and Country; we may look only for a revolt on the plains, and down the north shore—a few small houses are now burning on the side of the mountain on the opposite the American harbor.
