National Gazette

Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

What is this article about?

A correspondent from Savannah, Georgia, corrects a National Gazette article by asserting Georgia's superiority in cotton production over Carolina, producing three times more and establishing the export market first. Georgia's cotton seed is in high demand, and similar claims apply to tobacco, with Georgia challenging Carolina's staples like indigo and rice.

Full Text

[From a Correspondent in Savannah, Georgia.]

"In a late National Gazette I find mention made of a machine for ginning Carolina Cotton. As a Georgian, the words Carolina Cotton were grating, and occasioned a momentary disgust with the writer of the paragraph. On consideration, however, I concluded it was more owing to want of information than an intention to rob Georgia of the credit of that staple; for the fact is, that where Carolina makes one pound of cotton for sale Georgia makes three, and Carolina made none for exportation until Georgia had established its character. The Georgia cotton seed is in great demand, not only on the continent but in the Bahama islands, and her cotton commands the height of the British market. The same observations hold good with respect to tobacco. In the northern prices current it is all "Carolina Tobacco," altho' a very considerable proportion of what is shipped at Charleston is brought from Georgia. Indigo and rice are staples which from long habit Carolina has a right to by courtesy, but even in those staples, Georgia is fast approaching to something more than rivalry, and in a short time will claim a preference."
