Gen. Howard on Copperheads
Gen. Howard in his speech at Farming-
ton when he left to join the army, speaking
of the claims of many of the peace party
to peculiar mercy and humanity, not to say
Christianity, asked, "Whence have they
derived these high, holy principles which
cause them to sympathize with that ex-
cellent and goodly sect called Friends?
Have these men not been distinguished in
the past for the rowdyism of the bar-room,
the street and the brothel? Do their bloat-
ed countenances, blasphemous language, and
murderous conduct indicate affection with
the Prince of Peace or the Prince of Dark-
ness? How much weight can we give to
the peaceable professions of such men as in
New York murdered and robbed the loyal
and law-abiding citizen? Their professions
are a lie! Their "immediate peace"
means perpetual war! They cry "peace!"
in order to produce conflict malignant,
exterminating, eternal:
