THE CHIEFTAIN OF ALL TRUE AMERICANS
MARTIAL HYMN,
By W. Ray, esq.
Arm! sons of freedom, arm!
The British Legions come!
Blow loud the trumpet of alarm,
And roll the thund'ring drum
Fly to repel the foe!
Your dearest rights to save—
Crush the dire monster at a blow,
Ye spirits of the brave!
Shall Britons, drunk with blood,
Your peaceful shores invade!
Shall the fell despots of the flood,
Your conquerors be made?
Forbid it, Mighty God!
My country, O forbid it!
No—let us nail them to the sod,
As our forefathers did.
Vile party spirit, hence!
Like brothers all unite:
NATURE'S FIRST LAW IS SELF DEFENCE,
And LIBERTY her right.
For this our patriots fought,
For this our fathers bled;
And shall they bleed and die for nought?
O, never be it said!
Shall that imperious pow'r,
Recolonize this land?
Curs'd be the tongue that courts that hour,
And wither'd be the hand
That aids it! Rather, by discord rent,
Let orb on orb be hurl'd,
And by the Avenger's arm be sent
To sink the western world.
Behold our tars impress'd—
SIX THOUSAND BRITISH SLAVES!
Behold our commerce burnt, distress'd,
And sunk beneath the waves!
To Hampton turn your eyes—
A scene which devils shame!
And hear your wives' and children's cries
At Buffalo, in flames!
Breathes here a man, whose tongue
A treacherous heart betrays—
Who boasts the British ne'er do wrong,
And justifies their ways?
Lives here a wretch so vile—
A caitiff so abhorr'd?
Let demons own him with a smile,
An outcast from the Lord.
Aggressions to remove,
Or die, if die you must,
And aided by that Power above,
Who knows our cause is just.
Fly to repel the foe,
Your dearest rights to save,
UNITED STRIKE THE CONQUER'D BLOW,
OR FALL AMIDST THE BRAVE.
