Since writing the above communication, I have, unexpectedly, received the following letter from Mr. Hargon. I did not intend to ask for or publish any certificates. But as this gentleman has kindly volunteered one, it is proper that it should be published.

Camden, July 7, 1841.

To Sam'l. Hamblen. Esq.

Dear Sir:—Seeing a communication in the Mississippi Creole of the 3d inst. which my name in connection with yours is used by Mr. J. H. McBlair.

I deem it a duty to myself to state, that a suit was entered against Mr. Westbrook in my name without my knowledge or consent, Mr. McBlair last spring at muster at Stump Bridge told me that you and himself were not on speaking terms and requested me the favor to ask you for the amount ($567) that I could keep the money and use it and pay Mr. J. M. Lloyd for whose benefit it was intended, saying at the same time I could act as the agent of Mr. Lloyd. I consented at first without due deliberation, but seeing myself likely to be involved in a law suit I declined any further agency in the matter, not knowing that there was any judgment in my name, against Mr. Westbrook at that time.

I deny the charge that you sent any person directly or indirectly to alarm me in the case in any respect.

I likewise state in justice to you, that you complied with all the promises that I permitted you to do viz: at court you promised to pay the above amount to me at my house after court. You called at my house according to promise and tendered me the money, but I refused to accept it, saying I renounced all agency in the matter. Not having any communication from you on this subject. I thought it my duty to state the facts so far as I am concerned. You are at liberty to use this as you please.

Yours, Respect'y.

JOHN HARGON.
