MORE TAXES ON CITIZENS
The Gateway, as it has stated from time to time, is absolutely against any increase of taxes. Rather it believes that expenses should be cut, so that the languishing industries of the Territory may thrive. There are so many remedial questions to be adjusted by the legislature that it can well afford to overlook the question of taxes. The Territory needs a weights and measures inspector, it needs a pure food law to prevent shipments of spoiled canned goods to the Territory, it needs a Territorial constabulary to patrol the back districts and render aid to miners and prospectors, as well as travelers on the trail. It needs a law preventing aliens from bringing and carrying arms in the Territory, killing game promiscuously out of season. It needs a law providing that insane persons brought to the Territory by the canneries, should be taken back to the port from which they embarked by the cannery companies, instead of being thrown on the Territory, to be charged to Alaska as part of her insane. It needs many laws, and lower taxes. It needs a repeal of the sales tax, which is wrong. Remedial legislation is welcome but any act tending to make conditions harder for Alaskans should be frowned upon by the voters.
