Albertus Voght, the "phosphate prince" of Marion county, claims that the soft Florida phosphate is soluble and supplies plant food in its natural condition.
Reviewing the phosphate discovery in a recent issue of the Ocala Banner he says:
"On May 1st, 1889, in sinking a well on my own place, I found it [phosphate] in enormous quantities, and during that month I found, too, that the soft phosphate when taken from several feet under the ground is soluble and highly beneficial to plant life. I put it on the top of leaf mold with which I had mulched my grove, leaving it exposed to the sun and air, and never saw such a growth as the trees put on when the rainy season set in."
