Full Text

The Sumter (S. C.) Watchman says: "In riding over some 25 miles of Sumter district recently, we missed the wide extended fields of cotton upon which we were accustomed to look in former years; and in lieu thereof, we saw on every hand fields of corn, potatoes and sugar cane, with an occasional patch of cotton. The gin and the screw are idle, but the wagons are busy hauling up the cane and the mills busy in expressing the juice, and the boiler seething with the foaming syrup. Verily, the King has laid aside his sceptre for a while, and Ceres and her sweet companions hold their delight in sway."
