Full Text

Extract of a letter from Lyons, June 23.

We just now received advice from Rome that the new Pope, since his coronation, has caused the General of the Jesuits, and six of his assistants, to be arrested and lodged in the castle of St. Angelo; and that Cardinal Torregiani is banished to Rimini, on account, it is said, of proofs being received from the Court of Spain that they were the authors of the late conspiracies in that kingdom. It is added that the Pope has appointed a provisional Vicar General to govern the Society for six months, and in the mean time all their effects are sequestered. In these circumstances, his Holiness has thought proper to issue a special order that none of the Cardinals quit Rome.
