Full Text

Baltimore, July 5.

Fourth of July.--Yesterday the different regiments attended divine worship, and sermons appropriate to the occasion were delivered. It would, we think, be compatible with the dignity and solemnity of the occasion, if this mode of solemnizing the anniversary of our national independence was more generally adopted.

It is usually celebrated by an oration-a military parade and toasts. Unfortunately, in high political excitement, these toasts are made to partake of all that rancor, entertained by party opponents; so that the day which ought to be commemorated with all the cordial and benevolent feelings, is too often sacrificed to party spite and resentment.
