Chaska—Loudly and vociferously, the man attired in working clothes and speaking with a sharp Scandinavian touch, told his fellow travelers on the bus that he was bound for Chaska. In fact, Chaska was the one and only spot in which he desired to be.
But as the bus rolled into that town, he peered out of the window and decided he didn't like the looks of things nearly as well as he had thought. As long as it didn't suit him, he refused to leave the bus.
Arguments failed, and it took the long arm of the law to finally "persuade" him that as long as his ticket called for Chaska, he had to get off there. The peace officer invited him to be a guest of the city. He accepted. The Hotel Bastile was his shelter. The next day the transient was ordered to leave town, but turned up later as a self-appointed traffic cop, directing traffic at a school intersection. He had become so enamoured of the town that he had decided to stay.
In fact, he did stay—one more night, in the same hotel. After which the town became as tired of his company as he had first been tired of the town, and he was sent back to the state transient camp in the Minnesota river valley.
