What is this article about?
The Pioneer defends against the Vindicator's ridicule over its article exposing the Vindicator's Know Nothing associations during the recent election campaign. It accuses the Vindicator of supporting Fillmore, avoiding criticism of the secret order, and now betraying them post-election, while affirming the Pioneer's independence from such groups.
Merged-components note: Merged as continuation of the same editorial attacking the Vindicator on Know Nothing associations.

We did not and do not object to the Vindicator's support of Dark Lanternism in the late campaign. It had an undoubted right to urge the claims of Fillmore as well as those of Buchanan. Indeed, we thought it very kind in our neighbor to make his paper an organ of Fillmoreism. But it is certainly ungenerous, now that he has enjoyed their confidence and pocketed their money, to commence slurring them, and so soon after the election, too! Can it be, that some new scheme is on foot aiming at the destruction of his life?—some new "gunpowder plot" to "blow him up"? We wouldn't advise the Dark Lanternites to take his life, but when he attempts to desert them, they have a right, under the fugitive law, we believe, to reclaim him as a fugitive from "service and labor."
The Vindicator pretends to believe that our article was written by somebody about the Court House—a "third degree" member of the secret Order!—
We assure the Vindicator man that all articles which appear in the editorial columns of the Pioneer, are written by the person whose name stands first as editor at the head of the paper, who has never been connected with Know Nothingism in any way, shape or manner, never gave the least countenance to any movement for proscribing men on account of their birthplace or religion, and never will.—
Can you truthfully say the same, Mr. Vindicator? You know you cannot.
