WASHINGTON, May 9—(UP) — The war labor board today demanded 1,200 workers involved in an unauthorized strike at the Williamsport, Pa., plant of Bethlehem Steel, return to work immediately and submit their dispute to mediation by the board.
WLB Chairman William H. Davis telegraphed officials of the steel workers organizing committee (CIO) and the company that the board will hold a hearing May 12 on the dispute.
The workers struck Wednesday, after charging the company with unwarranted delay in the settlement of grievances and in the establishment of grievance machinery.
Yesterday they telegraphed Davis and President Roosevelt a request that the government seize the plant.
Davis told the workers the strike was in violation of the union's no-strike pledge and has "interfered with the production of necessary materials for our war effort."
