Full Text

The people of South Carolina as a whole and the people of the respective counties of the State seem to be easily pleased when it comes to the election of candidates who will have a hand in fixing the cost of the State government. As long as the people accept the candidate's statement that "I do not see how it will be possible to cut down the appropriations," just so long will there be no relief from the high tax rate about which so many complain, only to turn around and vote to continue it. In 1918 Governor Cooper was elected on just such a platform. Everybody knows whether his administration was marked by economy or extravagance. Again in 1922 Governor McLeod got in on a similar platform, and during the four years he has been in office we have seen a repetition of what happened during the Cooper administration. Are the people in earnest when they say they want a change from the last eight years' way of running things in Columbia or are they joking? The August primary will answer.
