The issue of the struggle in the West Indies between the French and English it is easy to conjecture.
The French, to carry their point, have given freedom to the negroes, and by means of these, they will baffle any attempts of the English to regain possession of the islands; but it will be equally impossible for themselves to retain a sovereignty over them, and it remains to be seen whether such a system can be put into activity as to secure to the world the enjoyment of the articles produced almost exclusively in those islands.
Sunday arrived here the schooner Hawke, capt. Webb, from Grenada, last from St. Thomas's in 20 days.
He sailed from the former on the 12th March, where he was embargoed together with a number of other American vessels, for 39 days.
He informs, that about the beginning of March, a Republican officer, said to be a native of St. Georges, in the same island, had arrived at Grenada with a flag of truce, whom they immediately arrested and hanged.
On the 3d March, the British made a Sally on the Republican camp, situated about 15 miles from the port of Grenada, when a bloody engagement ensued, in which the British were repulsed with great slaughter and their governor killed; amongst the number slain were 40 sailors belonging to the Resource frigate.
Another British frigate and a sloop of war lay in the harbour.
In consequence of this disastrous defeat it was generally believed that the whole of Grenada would in a few days be surrendered to the Republicans.—St. Vincent's and St. Lucia were said to be in the same situation.
A report prevailed that St. Eustatia had surrendered to the French.
