Full Text
We have from the loose or the hasty ebullitions of passion or pride, many useful hints and warnings—a few years ago, the name of republicanism from Boston to the Potomac, was a theme of satire and reproach—the Boston Centinel let slip lately its old slang, by retracting the idea of hostility to republicanism, taking refuge in the silly quibble, that its hostility was not to republicanism, but to democracy!
When a creature is driven to such a subterfuge, we can easily determine of what stuff he is made. Another Boston writer in a publication called the Anthology (merely because there is an English publication of that name) has come forth more explicitly—he says thus boldly—“We never fought for a republic, into which we were forced by an injudicious obstinacy of our opponents—thus our form of government was the result of necessity, and not the offspring of choice.”
The Boston Chronicle with its usual spirit and temper, has exposed the hypocrite and impostor. But we have creatures of this kind in all parts of the country. Two or three years ago, a paper was established at Baltimore, called the Anti-Democrat, and in that paper it was undertaken in a series of thirteen or fourteen labored essays, to give colour to the hostility to democracy, by denying that our governments are democracies; the writer or writers of those papers rote themselves and their paper down—and proved by experience the fallacy of their doctrines.
