LAWYER IN RACE FOR NAACP BOARD POSITION
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nominating Committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has offered the name of City Councilman Z. Alexander Looby, for membership on the National Board of Directors
Looby's name is among those submitted to the various local branches over the country for consideration at their annual meetings. Returns are to be in the National Office by December 31, and votes will be counted January 4, 1954
Confident that Looby's election to one of the 16 spots on the Board, Tennessee NAACP leaders aver that "No man offered could bring to the Board, training, courage, experience or genuine ability superior to that of Attorney Looby."
Born in Antigua, B. W. I., Attorney Looby received his undergraduate training at Howard University, the LL. B. degree from Columbia University and the S. J. D. degree from New York University.
For many years his name has been prominently associated with cases in which civil rights victories have been won.
Among the civil right cases Looby has won are these:
1. Equalization of teachers Salaries, Nashville, Tenn.
2. Equalization of teachers salaries, Jackson, Tenn.
3. Three cases against the University of Tennessee for the admission of Negro students.
4. Saving the Columbia, Tenn., riot victims from long term penitentiary sentences.
5. Nearly 20 years, the only lawyer in Nashville to handle cases involving discrimination
6. A case pending in U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals seeking admission of Negro children to the high school of Anderson County, Tenn.
Regarding Dr. Looby's work in the well remembered Columbia riot trials, Thurgood Marshall has had this to say, "In the Columbia trials Dr. Looby performed a task which will go down in history as one of the finest, if not finest jobs ever done he has been the 'Rock of Gibralter' around which the splendid defense of these cases has carried on."
Recipient of many awards for outstanding contributions, Attorney Looby was elected to the Nashville Council in 1951. He is a member of the National Legal Committee, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; chairman of the Legal Redress Committee, Tennessee State Conference of Branches, NAACP; member of the National Lawyers National Bar Association; Episcopalian; 33 degree Mason, author article in law journal.
