Letters received over land advise us of the total defeat of Shaich Twiney, by Soliman the Pacha of Bagdat, in October last, near Agra, on the banks of the Euphrates. The usurper, after a desperate conflict of several hours, was fortunate enough to escape with a few followers. The Pacha shortly afterwards made his triumphal entry into Bagora, and re-assumed the government, without any disturbance, where every thing remained in the utmost tranquility. Shaich Twiney took possession of Bagora the 6th of May last; his usurpation has not therefore been of long duration. His reign, short as it was, has not been stained by any acts of cruelty or rapacity: to the English he was ever most friendly, respectful, and attentive. As a man, and as a Prince, for he was a Chief of the Monific Arabs, a powerful tribe, take him for all in all, he was deserving of better fortune: his enemies allowed him courage, enterprize and liberality. His usurpation he defended on these grounds: "That his ancestors had enjoyed, for a long period, the quiet possession of Bagora, then a distinct Pachalick, with the very honorable title of Pacha of Three Tails! That although circumstances had deprived his family of so distinguished an honor of more than a century, yet the moment capricious fortune placed him at the head of his tribe, he had so far suffered the general good to overcome his pretensions, as to strain every nerve in procuring the separate appointment of Pacha of Bagora for Soliman, whose ingratitude, and total inattention to the duties of his office, had determined him to take upon himself the reins of government."
