Curses Loud and Deep. -- It is sometimes interesting to see one individual get mad and relieve his burdened mind of actual or fancied grievances; but when a whole town gets its back up and growls, the spectacle is truly grand. If the unanimous execration of the business men of Virginia could sink the City Fathers, their days on the surface of this fair earth would be very few, for such an indignant set of men at the enforcement yesterday of the city ordinance relating to signs can seldom be seen. The public confidence in the easy good nature of its officers, has been outraged, and one of the tenderest spots in its composition rudely assailed. This morning the best legal talent in the city had been engaged to contest the action of the Board of Aldermen, and the war over its legality may be expected to be desperate and prolonged. The side-walks had a bare, denuded look after the signs were taken down yesterday, and much of the bustle incident to a lively town seemed to have departed. The business men ought not to take the matter too seriously to heart, however, for are they not allowed to have lamps, on which they can advertise their business just as well as by the old wooden sign-boards? This is a loop-hole of escape from the dilemma, of which, if they are at all shrewd, they will avail themselves without delay.
