Full Text

The board of selectmen and the town school board held a meeting in the assessor's office last night and indulged in a lengthy discourse on educational matters. It was voted, on motion of Porter L. Wood, to appropriate from the town treasury for school purposes a sum not exceeding $10 a week for each teacher's salary for forty weeks and that the town pupils now attending the High school shall receive the benefit of the provisions of the statute in regard to payment of tuition by the town. The act referred to provides that towns shall pay the tuition fee of residents of the town schools who are attending high schools approved by the state board of education and that the state shall pay two-thirds of the expense to the town treasurer. The meeting was not able to determine whether Waterbury would come under the clause which provides that the state shall pay two-thirds of such expense. The act says: "Every town, the grand list of which does not exceed $900,000, shall annually in July, receive from the treasurer of the state an amount equal to two-thirds of the aggregate of the sums which have been actually paid by the town for tuition fees under the provisions of Section 1; provided that not more than $30 shall be paid for each scholar attending from any town." Waterbury's grand list is $12,555,193. The whole thing appeared rather ambiguous and it was voted to get an opinion on the subject from Town Attorney Greene Kendrick.
