Event Details
A number of gentlemen interested in the proposed New Mexico colored colonization scheme called on President Garfield. Dr. Harvey, secretary of the Howard university, stated that the university was interested in a large tract of land in New Mexico, and it was proposed to have it examined with a view to its settlement by colored emigrants from the south. For this purpose it was deemed necessary to have a delegation visit the territory to inspect the land, and the president was requested to aid them by furnishing a small escort of soldiers to insure the safety of exploring party.
