What is this article about?

An editorial satirically accuses an honorable U.S. House committee chairman from near New York, a strong advocate for non-importation policies, of smuggling British goods worth $200,000-$300,000 from Canada into the United States. It suggests this explains his reluctance to end restrictions and eagerness for war with Britain.

A PEEP AT PROBABLE CAUSES.

It is said an honorable chairman of one of the most important Committees of the House of Representatives, who resides not many miles out of the state of New-York, a great stickler for non-importation, &c. has been lately detected in smuggling into the United States British Goods from Canada to the trifling amount of not more than from two to three hundred thousand dollars! No wonder this disinterested patriot should have felt such a repugnance to discontinuing the restrictive system, and such an itching to enter into a war with Great-Britain. Particulars, we expect will transpire in a few days.
