Extract of a letter from Monte Christe, dated July 1.

—" Since your Departure I went up in the Little-Bob, and attacked the French Rendezvous, where they had 200 Hogsheads and Casks filled with Sand. and laid in a Row on the rising Ground, a Battery of 10 Carriage and 16 Swivel Guns, where they had a large Sloop belonging to New London, and three French Privateers: The Wind blowing fresh from the Shore, we were a long Time before we could get in; the French therefore set Fire to the Sloop, and entirely destroyed her, and beat our Boats off by a continual Fire from their Battery. the Woods, and behind the Casks. We run in until we came within Pistol Shot of the Battery, then anchor'd with a Spring on our Cable, and kept a continual Fire on them for the Space of two Hours, and they at us: In the mean Time 60 of our People landed to Leeward, under Cover of the Smoak, marched up behind the Hill, and took them in Flank, whilst we battered them in Front, The Dispute was smart. but our brave Tars carried the Day. We took the Privateer, got off all the Provisions, Guns and Ammunition, tumbled all the Sand out. of the Casks. and burnt every Thing we could not carry off. In fine, we peppered them genteely. having only one Man wounded, and none killed. The French were exactly 100, of which Number 15 were killed. and many wounded. A lucky Hit it was for the Seaflower of New York. who must have been taken by them had they not been destroyed the Day before, This Affair will lessen the Insurance in New York."

French burned the sloop and fired from battery, woods, and casks. Little-Bob anchored within pistol shot, exchanged fire for two hours. 60 men landed, flanked the position. Captured the battery and one privateer, removed provisions and arms, emptied sand casks, burned the rest.
