Henry Carr, a fiddler, who said his home is in Philadelphia, was taken to the police station shortly after midnight suffering from a wound on his head from which blood oozed freely. He was entirely sober.
Officer Gillen found him face to the ground at the bottom of the high steps leading into Flinn's barber shop in the basement of the Robinson Building at the Northeast corner of Fourth and Market streets.
A railing runs across the front of the alley in which the steps leading to the barber shop are located. This railing was erected as a protection against accidents.
About 11.45 last night Henry Carr meandered up Fourth street and sought rest hanging over the railing. He rested about ten minutes when forsooth the railing gave way against his weight.
Carr plunged and landed on his head at the foot of the steps, seven or eight feet below. On the way to the foot of the landing his head struck the intervening steps, causing a wound on his head.
When Officer Gillen picked him up the officer thought Carr was dead.
When interrogated at the police station, Carr said he was hurt nowhere but on the head. The officers in the station were surprised to find that the man had not broken his neck. Their first impression was that he was a fit subject for the hospital, but his half condition precluded his transfer to any of the hospitals.
Captain Chambers dressed his head.
