As the result of a cow straying in front of a westbound extra Denver Rio Grande freight train last night near Ohipeta switch, a few miles east of Delta, the engine and five cars were derailed and Eli Trousglen, the fireman and whose home is in this city, was crushed to death. The cow suddenly appeared in front of the engine and when the engine struck the cow it jumped the track, went into the ditch dragging five cars after it. The engine was badly damaged and several of the cars were literally broken to pieces. The fireman was caught under the engine and had no chance to escape. The damage to rolling stock is quite heavy. Traffic was delayed for many hours. The cow that caused the fatal wreck was killed by the engine. The engineer and all other trainmen but the fireman escaped unhurt or with slight injuries. The dead fireman married a young woman of Montrose some months ago.
