Bro. Bell says Mr. Gordon 'is a clever fellow.' So he is, Bro. Bell, so he is. Lewis F. Gordon is a courteous, kindly, genial gentleman, but at the same time he is firm and faithful, staunch and true. The Journal need not have the slightest apprehension as to any lack of steadfastness in whatever Mr. Gordon believes to be right just or expedient. He will wage no 'crusade', but he will do his whole duty. He will be upright and downright, straightforward and unswerving, law-abiding and law enforcing: but he will not undertake to be "court jury and all hands." Let no one however mistake that plain shrewd Abe Lincoln sort of man. He is modest and unassuming, but he understands himself. and he understands others. If the people elect him to be Sheriff, Sheriff he will be, courageous, courteous, faithful and efficient officer—but no Ring, no clique, no faction will own him, nor awe him, He will not forget his friends; no man ought to do that; but neither will he prostitute his office, and some men have done that, He will owe his election neither to the "liquor interest" nor "the gambling interest"to the 'jury mongers,"the "money lenders" nor the "ring masters"—but the people, and he will serve the people and nobody else, The nomination came to him entirely unsought; he accepted it absolutely unpledged. His hands are clean; his head is level. He will guard all the interests of justice. acknowledge all the claims of humanity. be kind to the unfortunate but firm as a rock in the discharge of his duty. He is "clever" but he is clean; and there is no collar around his neck. He is self-made but is well made —a plain man, with a heap of common sense about him, but no one who knows Lewis F. Gordon presumes upon his pliability. It may be "suaviter in mode" but it certainly is 'fortiter in re'. He would dislike to hang a man, but if necessary he would do it. He would let no guilty man escape. Vote for Gordon, Bro. Bell; that is the short cut to deliverance. Vote for Gordon, every honest voter; that is the effectual way to demolish the Ring, and you will get a good Sheriff besides. "Codlin and not short;" Gordon and not Shutts this time, Bro. Bell. The case is too urgent; time is too precious.
