Negro Jurors And Justice in the Courts
It has sometimes been suggested that Negroes will not make good jurors in our courts because of their lack of general intelligence and the strong liability that there is to their being unduly influenced when it comes to making up a decision. Of course many reasons for not having Negroes as jurors can be found and will be advanced by those who do not wish them.
Alabama for the first time in its history, is having colored men serve as jurors in the courts of that state. Here in Knox County we had Negro jurors probably fifty years ago. There have been intervals of several years when we had no Negro jurors, but there has been no general policy here as in some sections not to have them. These Negro jurors in the main have been honest and intelligent. Knox County has had Negroes on both grand and trial juries recently. These men have been equal to the average white man in intelligence and have been men of sound and substantial character. Justice in our southern states is not likely to miscarry because of the presence of colored men on our court juries.
