The surmise that Fort Sumter has been re-enforced has made the circuit and gained strength by the operation. Sent to New York by the correspondent of the Times, who probably picked it up as a stray rumor, and then passed through the telegraph, it becomes almost authentic testimony, although it is probably, in fact, no more than the echo of a story that appeared in the Tribune several days before.
There is another story of the re-enforcement of Fort Sumter, which, to say the least, is quite as good, and bears the appearance of being just as authentic. A letter received in this city on Saturday last, from a gentleman in Boston, states that a secret expedition was set on foot at that city, with a view to the re-enforcement. It was composed of ninety-three Nantucket fishermen, snugly packed away in a schooner well provided with whale-boats. The plan was to take advantage of the night, and run in as closely as was safe, and put the men into the fort by means of the whale-boats. Such an enterprise would be well-suited to the adventurous character of the class of men who are said to be engaged in it; and if attempted, could scarcely fail of success. We hope the fort has been re-enforced, and that it has been done in this way: for it is certainly a very weak style of doing business for the Government of the greatest and most powerful nation upon which the sun ever shone, to be meanly stealing soldiers into its own fortifications, upon its own soil, under cover of darkness.
