Full Text

For months past an army of tramps have been encamped in a clump of cedars on the line of the New Jersey Southern Railroad, near Long Branch, just above Branchport station. The camp is popularly known as "Little Red Bank," and from there frequent sorties are made upon adjoining farms and hen roosts. Wednesday night of last week a large squad of officers closed in on the colony while they were roasting chickens. Twenty men were captured, while fully as many more escaped, hotly pursued by the officers. Pistol shots were exchanged, and one tramp is supposed to have received a bullet in his shoulder. Some wine and cigars, besides other goods were found in the camp, which proved to be part of a lot stolen from Fav's Hotel. Burglar's tools were found in the possession of two of the tramps, who it was supposed were concerned in the hotel robbery. They were committed for trial. while the remainder were sentenced to various terms in the county jail. It is believed that these tramps were the perpetrators of the numerous burglaries in that neighborhood during the past two weeks, and efforts will be made to fix these robberies upon them.
