Full Text

Rev. Dr. SPRING.-It is said in a New-York paper of Thursday last, that this gentleman has declined his appointment to the Presidency of Dartmouth College. If this statement was authorised by Dr. S. himself, it is doubtless true or will soon become so; in which case, we may expect the course he has pursued will be fully vindicated. But, at present, we have strong reasons for doubting the authority of that publication. When a gentleman, after previous consultation and consent, receives an appointment, so important as that in question, and adjusts the terms of his acceptance, we are to presume that he understands the nature of the transaction and has a real intention of entering upon the office and fulfilling its duties. Imperious reasons might subsequently arise to justify a negative answer in such circumstances; but we are not informed, that, in this case, any such have arisen. There is, therefore, the strongest ground for questioning the correctness of the New-York article.
