Full Text

President Tyler and Mr. Botts. The Richmond Whig publishes an article from the pen of Mr. Botts, in which Mr. Tyler is accused of a variety of misdemeanors, such as being guilty of the most wilful and deliberate falsehoods, endeavoring to defraud an idiot ward, corruption and treachery, &c. In the course of the statement, Mr. Botts gives in detail certain conversations between himself and the President, which are interlarded on both sides, according to Mr. Botts' showing, with the most shocking profanity—indeed so coarse and shameful is it, that he is obliged to confess he considers it neither becoming to Mr. Tyler nor himself, and still less proper for the public prints. If Mr. Botts has not borne false witness in this matter, the President has exhibited himself as unworthy of occupying any office of public honor. For a Chief Magistrate to profess so much reverence and gratitude for the Almighty, in speaking of our national obligations, as Mr. Tyler is wont to do, while he is in the habit of profanely calling upon Him, is an inconsistency and hypocrisy of which we can hardly believe him guilty. Mr. Botts admits his wickedness in this respect, while in the same article he talks of the President "having sunk too low in all the attributes that adorn the character of a gentleman"—as if he could appreciate the qualities essential to the formation of such a character.
